This session is about the life, works and thought of the hugely influential thinker and philosopher Giordano Bruno, and the great controversy over why he was burned at the stake. Questions to spark interest: What crime did Bruno commit that got him sentenced to be burned? What kind of organisation was the medieval Inquisition? Was Copernicus really the first to propose heliocentrism? How did our concept of "science" originate? How is it related to theology, scholasticism and occultism? Questions for discussion: "What is truth?" (the question the judge Pilate asked Jesus Christ in the Gospels) What is the relationship between reason and revelation, and between science and religion? How did the dominant worldview of "modern society" take shape step by step? What impact did the Middle Ages have on modern society? Which parts of its legacy have been kept, and which rejected?
