旧金山既是美国的科技中心，也是美国无家可归问题最严重的城市。美国的城市往往有两种面貌，一面是中产阶级的白领咖啡馆和剧院，一面是毒品泛滥的帐篷和救济所。可你知道吗，形成这两种面貌的原因其实是相同的，那就是城市的士绅化（gentrification）。 什么是城市的士绅化？旧城改建难道不是一件天大的好事吗？美国城市的重建到底有哪些黑暗的过去？今天的市长们到底是如何应对无家可归问题的？我们会从罗斯福新政引发的郊区化（suburbanization）说起，讲讲美国士绅化的来龙去脉，谈谈这一问题到底应该如何解决。
San Francisco is both America's tech hub and the US city with the most severe homelessness problem. American cities often have two faces: on one side, middle-class white-collar cafés and theatres; on the other, drug-ridden tents and shelters. But did you know that both faces have the same cause: urban gentrification? What is gentrification? Isn't redeveloping old neighbourhoods a wonderful thing? What dark past lies behind the rebuilding of American cities? How are today's mayors actually dealing with homelessness? Starting from the suburbanisation set off by Roosevelt's New Deal, we will trace the story of gentrification in America and discuss how the problem should be solved.
