Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table…'

"It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire." —F. Scott Fitzgerald, Echoes of the Jazz Age, New York In the 1920s, 150 years had passed since Paris was rebuilt with its broad boulevards; the Second Industrial Revolution had been complete for nearly a decade, and its end, the First World War, had only just finished. In the 1920s, the salon had existed for more than two hundred years, The Principles of Psychology had been out for thirty years, and the name "jazz" had been coined only five years before. This was the 'Jazz Age', the 'Années folles', the 'Goldenen Zwanziger', and also the "Lost Generation". The modern is dead, and the twenties were its peak and its soul; the contemporary is here, inevitably built upon it. If you too want to see the flickering faces of bats and hear the fragments of the night scatter, if you too are lost, then come. The images in the rain are still waiting to be picked up, the twelve-bar blues can play on, essays, novels and manifestos are still piled on the table, and Hemingway, Eliot and Marinetti are all waiting for you. This Friday evening, let us carry on the salon of a hundred years ago. Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table…' —T. S. Eliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Questions: Describe in a sentence or two an object or scene that made a deep impression on you. This year's Met Gala theme was "In America: Gilded Glamour". Did anyone's look stand out to you? Share a work of art or literature, or a creator, from or about the 1920s. How do you understand modernity, and how does it differ from postmodernity?
