The Boiling Age: How the Climate Overheated
Remember the two heatwaves in July and early October? Independence Day week was the hottest week in 100,000 years; temperatures even in San Francisco were about 10°C above the historical average, and the heat in San Jose even caused one death. The area burned by wildfires in California this year has so far reached 40 times the five-year average, and the frequency of billion-dollar weather disasters in the US is 4.2 times what it was 30 years ago. You may remember that Wednesday in September 2020 when smoke from record-breaking wildfires blotted out the sky and turned the Bay Area into a dim red Mars for an entire day. Over the past decade, more and more climate scientists have come to believe that these increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather disasters are not natural, but the result of human-caused climate overheating. Climate overheating, also known as "climate change" or "global warming", is the long-term change in the Earth's temperature and weather patterns. Since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels have brought us enormous development and convenience, but they have also made society dependent on them and released trillions of tonnes of carbon pollution. Questions to spark interest: - Do you remember the most recent extreme weather events? Why was October so hot? - How long has modern climate science been developing? What theories have been overturned? - What historical events greatly affected global carbon emissions? - What does artificial intelligence have to do with the climate? Questions for discussion: - How does climate change affect our daily lives? - How do we know climate overheating is human-caused? Which factors bear the main responsibility? - What have companies and the state of California done, and what have they achieved? - How can ordinary people lobby members of Congress?
