This session will briefly tell the story of the Battle of Ueno in the Boshin War, and we will read together a related short story by Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, "The Chastity of Otomi". We have previously read Akutagawa's "The Nose" and told a story from the Aizu War, so this session rounds out those earlier stories and fulfils a long-held wish. - Why did the Battle of Ueno break out after the surrender of Edo Castle? - What role did the Shōgitai play? - What is the story "The Chastity of Otomi" about? - Why was the Japanese actor Nishida Toshiyuki vilified by people from his home region after playing Saigō Takamori? - Some of the plot and views in "The Chastity of Otomi" may not fully accord with modern feminist values; we hope everyone will discuss and examine them critically.
