This session looks at The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, which Engels wrote after reading Lewis Henry Morgan's Ancient Society, and uses it to discuss the recently controversial idea of socialised child-rearing. Questions for discussion: How did the family unit arise as the eras changed? What role did the clan play in the emergence and evolution of the family? What changes did the family unit go through in different regions? What is the relationship between the social system and the family system? How has modern society changed the family system? Is socialised child-rearing feasible? If so, is it the only answer?
