More than a third of San Francisco's residents today are Asian American, including Chinese, Japanese and Filipino Americans. Why has this city attracted so many Asians, and even given rise to the largest Chinatown and Japantown in the United States? What brought them to this unfamiliar city to make a living? What hardships, and even persecution, did they face as they tried to fit in? And how did Asian immigrants transform the city itself? Starting from San Francisco's Japantown, this session will tell the story of the city's Asian immigrants and how the city has changed. Questions to spark interest: - Why does San Francisco have the largest Chinatown and Japantown? - Why is San Francisco so important to the Japanese? - Why did the Fillmore District, once San Francisco's most diverse neighbourhood and home to all kinds of minorities, disappear? - How did San Francisco's former Manilatown (the Filipino community) vanish? - Why were Japanese Americans on the West Coast sent to internment camps during the Second World War? What was life like in the camps? How did they rebuild their homes after the war? - How did Japanese Americans take part in the fight for equal rights during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 70s? - What discriminatory laws against Asians have there been in American history? How did people survive in that environment? When were these laws repealed?
