This session offers a brief introduction to the metrical rules of regulated verse, through examples and interaction. Some questions to get us started: Ancient poetry, old-style verse, regulated verse, modern poetry, lüshi, jueju and so on: how are they related to one another? What kind of poetry are we actually reading? What exactly do we mean by metrical rules? Does "Quiet Night Thoughts" follow the rules? Does "Birds Calling in the Ravine"? Does "On Climbing Stork Tower"? Why do so many classical poems feel awkward to read aloud? How can people today learn level and oblique tones and the four tones? Here we try, travelling light and fast, to open a path into the rules of versification.
