At the very beginning of his Life of Lycurgus, Plutarch tells the reader that nothing can be said about this lawgiver that is not disputed: his family, his travels, his death and the way he made his laws are all told differently by different sources, and on the period in which he lived there is even greater disagreement. He then went on to write some forty thousand words, which became Europe's main source of knowledge about Spartan institutions for the next two thousand years. - Spartan poets of the seventh century BC praised their city's order but never named its founder; only in Xenophon does every rule come signed with Lycurgus's name. The institutions came first and the author afterwards: what happened in between? - When a reform programme is retroactively recast as an ancient constitution four hundred years old, is what we read today a record, or a reflection? - The number of full Spartan citizens fell from five thousand at Plataea to about seven hundred at Leuctra. Was this moral decline, or the inevitable result of how property was held? - From Plato to Rousseau, the same Sparta was read as a prescription for entirely different cures. Why is a lawgiver with no reliable history the most useful kind?
