Even counting the colonial period, American history is not very long, yet many of the familiar accounts of it are exaggerated to the point of distortion. This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, so people may be all the more interested in some of the real details of American history. Topics in this session include religious tolerance in the colonial period, the complex causes of the War of Independence and the key reasons for the American victory, the process and original intent of drafting the Constitution, the merits and failings of several of the leading Founding Fathers, the critical moments of the Civil War, and Lincoln's position.
