This session introduces Yan Shu, the Northern Song ci poet and statesman, and the history of the Qingli Reforms. Some questions we will discuss and that we hope will get you thinking: What is the style of Yan Shu's ci poems? Can you quote a line or two of his work? What role did he play in the development of Song ci? What were Yan Shu's relationships with the other great writers and ci masters of his time (Ouyang Xiu, Fan Zhongyan, Liu Yong, Zhang Xian and others)? What was Yan Shu's family life like? Known as a child prodigy from an early age, did Yan Shu really live "a lifetime of wealth, rank and peace"? What were the causes and consequences of the Qingli Reforms? How did Yan Shu, then serving as chief minister, view affairs of state? Did he take part in the Qingli Reforms? What role might Yan Shu have played between the third and fourth years of Qingli?
