This session tries a new format, starting from a travel account and personal reflections to lead into the topics we hope to share and discuss. In one sentence: the speaker visited Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park, saw the ecosystem of the giant sequoia groves, was reminded of Yu Xin's Rhapsody on a Withered Tree, and wrote a "rhapsody" (fu) of their own in imitation of it. What we will discuss, and hope to discuss: Are America's national parks worth visiting? How were America's national parks founded? As the third national park established in the United States, what is special about Sequoia National Park? How did the sequoia ecosystem form? What is special about it? What is the connection between Yu Xin's Rhapsody on a Withered Tree and the trees of Sequoia National Park? Is there still any need to write fu today, and what would be the point?
