This session will explore the backgrounds and works of the composer Mahler and the writer Kafka, with a lively discussion of their thought and sense of identity. The questions are as follows: 1. Why discuss Mahler and Kafka together? Is it just because "writer" and "composer" differ by only one character in Chinese? 2. What do Mahler the musician and Kafka the writer have in common? 3. What do you make of the ruptures and ideological clashes in Mahler's symphonic works? 4. How should we understand Kafka's ideas about writing and the metaphors in his work? 5. How did Mahler and Kafka bring elements of Chinese culture into their work? What attitude did they take towards Chinese culture? What are your impressions of Mahler and Kafka? Or, more broadly, what are your impressions of Germany and the Czech lands?
