24 April is Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. This session will introduce the background to these events, the history of the Armenian people, and the roles played by the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Questions to get us thinking: What kind of country is Armenia? Is it reasonable to call these events a "genocide"? Why has the Nagorno-Karabakh question become a conflict that continues to this day? Questions this session will discuss: How did the Armenian people take shape? What did the Ottoman Empire's Tanzimat reforms achieve? What is the relationship between the modern Turkish state and the Ottoman Empire? What did Enver Pasha and Mustafa Kemal Pasha each do? What role did the Young Turks and the Committee of Union and Progress play in the genocide?
