This session will discuss the establishment, relocation, rise and fall of the Pinglu military governors, a political and military group, from the High Tang to the Mid-Tang. Questions to think about beforehand: Were the military governorships a failed institution? How should we view the separatist military provinces? How do the Tang military provinces compare with the Byzantine theme system? In the talk we will discuss: What was the Tang's northeastern frontier like? How was An Lushan able to gain enormous power on the northeastern frontier? How did the Tang hold together after the An Lushan Rebellion? Why did the Pinglu Army go from being the main force in suppressing the rebellion to a grave threat to the Tang court? Compared with other military provinces, what was distinctive about the Pinglu Army?
