Some warm-up questions: What places made the deepest impression on you when you travelled in Seoul, or what would you like to see there? What do you know about the Second Republic and Park Chung-hee? The May 16 coup was a military coup launched on 16 May 1961 by Major General Park Chung-hee, then deputy commander of the South Korean Army's Second Army. It came little more than a year after the April 19 Revolution had brought down Syngman Rhee's government. Political power was then in the hands of the newly formed Democratic Party government under Prime Minister Chang Myon, but its grip on society was weak, and the economy and people's livelihoods had not noticeably improved. The coup ended the short-lived Second Republic and the Democratic Party government, and brought Park Chung-hee to power. It interrupted South Korea's constitutional order and began Park's eighteen years of rule and thirty-two years of military government in South Korea, while also laying the groundwork for the country's economic take-off. This session will tell the story of the May 16 coup, introduce the forces involved at the time, explore why the coup succeeded, and share some Seoul sightseeing spots connected with it. Questions we plan to discuss: The political forces in South Korea at the time: the politicians (the new and old factions of the Democratic Party), the military, the rebel troops, and the US forces How the coup unfolded Why the coup succeeded Sightseeing spots in Seoul connected with the May 16 coup: The Blue House (formerly the residence of the Japanese Governor-General of Korea) The buildings along Sejong-ro: the former Capitol (the Japanese Government-General Building, now demolished; the site is now part of Gyeongbokgung Palace), the former Supreme Council for National Reconstruction building (now the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History), the former National Assembly building (the Keijō Public Hall under Japanese rule, now the Seoul Metropolitan Council), Deoksugung Palace, the former Seoul City Hall, and the former Bando Hotel (now demolished) Sungnyemun Hangang Bridge Seoul National Cemetery

The notes below are in Chinese, as the talks are.
