This session tells the life of Wu Qi, military strategist and statesman of the Warring States period, his paradoxical character, and the much-debated killing of his wife. Questions to spark interest: Have you heard of Wu Qi? What sort of man do you imagine him to be? What stories of killing one's father or mother, son or daughter, or wife or husband do you know from East and West? Does "Once you've made it ashore, your first sword-stroke is for your sweetheart" count as a modern form of killing one's spouse? How should we view stories of murder within the family under paternalism (patriarchy), and the "complexes" behind them? What this session will discuss: What role did Wu Qi play in the Warring States period? What were Wu Qi's political and military achievements? How are killing one's parents, children or spouse reflected in the myths and legends of different countries? What is the subtle difference between paternalism and patriarchy?
